Profile PictureSonya Oguin

I am Sonya Oguin, an entrepreneur like yourself, who has been operating an Afro-print design company since 2017. I started Wax Elegancia after deciding to follow my passion for fashion designing and leveraging my natural talent for sewing. Prior to entering the business world, I spent 15 years in pharmacy and nursing. Entrepreneurship was the perfect answer to the talent that was slumbering in me. The realization that I could do more by running a business and inspiring others to pursue their passions, has encouraged me to embrace this journey. The transition from being an employee in service-oriented industries to running a profit-making venture was a bit challenging. Although I was aware of the importance of financial self-sufficiency and growth, the notion of making a great deal of money made me slightly uncomfortable because of the many preconceived ideas I held as a devout Christian. Inevitably, these ideas that associate money with ‘sin’, for instance, had consequences for my business at the beginning. For instance, my products were initially underpriced because I thought that people would perceive them as being ‘too expensive. I then realized that I was wrong when one of my clients told me that I was pricing my products too low for their quality.
